Can't Sleep at Night? A Therapist's Guide to Sleep and Anxiety
Trouble sleeping is one of the most common signs of anxiety — and one of the fastest to fix. Sleep and anxiety share the same nervous system, so calming one calms the other.
Why you can't sleep
At night, distractions fall away and your mind finally gets space — often at the exact moment you want it to shut off. Add in phone light, late caffeine, and unfinished worries, and your body simply cannot downshift.
A calming 60-minute wind-down
- Screens off 60 minutes before bed. Yes, actually.
- Dim the lights. Bright light tells your body it's still daytime.
- Write a worry offload: one page, everything on your mind, no editing.
- Write tomorrow's top 3. This tells your brain it's safe to stop planning.
- Warm shower or feet in warm water for 10 minutes.
- Slow breathing in bed: 4 in, 6 out, until you drift.
If you wake up at 3 am
This is often cortisol, not a personality flaw. Don't check the time. Don't check your phone. Slow your exhale, and remind yourself: rest counts, even if sleep doesn't come right away.
What not to do
- Scrolling on your phone in bed
- Caffeine after 2 pm
- Alcohol as a sleep aid — it fragments sleep
- Heavy meals within two hours of bed
- Doing intense work right before sleep
