How to Talk to a Therapist for the First Time (When You Don't Know What to Say)

By Jinira6 min read

Almost everyone arrives at their first session worried they'll say the wrong thing, waste the hour, or not be 'bad enough' to be there. None of that turns out to be true.

You don't need an opening speech

Your counsellor will start the conversation. A common first question is simply, 'What made you reach out now?' Answer it however it comes out — messy is fine. Therapy is one of the few places where you're not being assessed on how well you explain yourself.

Three sentences that are always enough

  • "I've been feeling off for a while and I can't explain why."
  • "Something specific happened and I haven't been the same since."
  • "I'm functioning fine on the outside and exhausted on the inside."

What happens in the 60 minutes

  1. A few minutes settling in and setting expectations about privacy.
  2. You talk about what's been going on; your counsellor listens and asks gentle questions.
  3. Together you name what you'd like to feel different.
  4. You leave with one or two practical things to try before the next session.

Common worries, answered

  • "Am I wasting their time?" — No. You don't need a crisis to qualify.
  • "What if I cry?" — Very common, completely fine, and often useful.
  • "What if I go blank?" — Say so. Silence in therapy is allowed and often productive.
  • "Will my family find out?" — No. Sessions are confidential and one-on-one.

How to know it's working

After two or three sessions you should feel slightly more understood, slightly clearer about what's happening, and a little less alone with it. Change is rarely dramatic early on — it looks like sleeping a bit better, or reacting a bit less sharply.

You don't have to arrive with the right words. Finding them is the work.
